Best Places to Work in IT 2011 Employer Profile

No. 9

Booz Allen Hamilton Inc.

McLean, Va. [South Atlantic]

Why you want to work there

Top 10 ranking: No. 8 for training, No. 4 for benefits The 300-plus members of the IT team at this global consulting firm based in McLean, Va., take their commitment to community service seriously. Employees devote hundreds of volunteer hours each year to causes they're passionate about. Many members of the IT team are deeply involved in two IT-led community partnerships: the Embry Rucker Community Shelter in Reston, Va., and the D.C. College Success Foundation. Going green The company recently developed the "Way We Work" facilities strategy to combat employees' long commute times. Instead of having the bulk of the firm's 14,000-plus D.C. metro area staff commuting to offices in McLean, which is know for its tremendous traffic snarls, staffers are now working in the D.C. area office closest to their homes. The firm has opened new offices and is expanding its presence in other locations around the D.C. area to support this initiative. The firm's new hoteling concept also makes it easier for IT staffers to find and use office space when they visit clients and teammates in other locations. The majority of IT staffers are taking advantage of flexible work arrangements, with most staff telecommuting at least two days each week. Awards season The highly competitive Booz Allen Excellence Awards program is the firm's highest level of professional recognition. Every year, the program honors individuals and teams in three categories: client service, diversity and inclusion, and community service. Recipients are celebrated at an awards gala, where they receive a special Steuben glass statue, and they are profiled in the firm's annual report and featured in the internal newsletter.
