Top-paying industries for IT 2011

Compare IT salaries across a sampling of industries and job titles.

Some IT professionals fared significantly better than others this year, based solely on the industry in which they work. Computerworld's 2011 Salary Survey, the top 5 industries for IT pay were business services/consulting (overall compensation up 2.8%), hospitality/travel (up 2.7%), transportation/logistics (up 2.7%), noncomputer manufacturing (up 2.6%) and defense/aerospace (up 2.1%).

The top industries for bonuses were transportation/logistics with an average 13% increase, followed by noncomputer manufacturing at 10% and retail at 7%.

IT workers in the computer dealer/reseller industry took the hardest hit in the past year, with a decrease in total compensation of 3.7%.

The largest average decreases in bonus payments were in the banking industry (-18.7%), defense/aerospace (-6.6%), legal/insurance/real estate (-2.8%), entertainment/marketing/advertising (-2.3%) and telecommunications (-2.1%).
